Ring of Kerry, Ireland

The Ring of Kerry is a popular tourist driving route around the Inveragh Peninsula in the southwest of Ireland. It’s a gorgeous place with Ireland’s highest mountains, beautiful forest, lakes, sandy beaches, castles, ruins, quaint villages and Skellig Michael, an incredible island just off the tip of the peninsula (see my other post – http://wornoutboots.ca/2016/07/10/skellig-michael-ireland/)

We first stayed at a caravan park in Killarney and visited nearby Ross Castle and Muckross Abbey, both of which were excellent. The next day we went on a guided tour of Muckross House, a mansion of some very wealthy nobles back in the day and explored the gorgeous gardens and woods on the surrounding lands. After that we drove through Killarney National Park, stopped at Torc Waterfall and walked around the beautiful old forest (some of the best I have seen), then continued up to Moll’s Gap where there was a great view of the Killarney lakes. Next we dropped down through a ruggedly beautiful landscape to Black Valley, then up and over the spectacular Gap of Dunloe. We had a picnic on a large sandy beach near Rossbeigh, then checked out the ruins of Ballycarbery Castle and Cahergall Stone fort. Later that day, we drove to Skelligs Chocolate near St Finian’s Bay and ate ice cream on a beach with a great view of Skellig Michael in the distance. Afterwards, we checked out Portmagee and had lunch in a great little pub. We camped at the excellent Mannix Point Camping and Caravan Park (www.campinginkerry.com).

The next day, I went a boat trip to Skellig Michael from Portmagee, then got back around 2pm. For the rest of the day we drove along the south side of the peninsula checking out beaches and villages and then stayed in Kenmare.

I had a great time on the Ring of Kerry and would love to go back and walk the Kerry Way next time.
