Della Falls

Della Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in Canada, maybe the tallest depending on how you define a waterfall. It’s located in the southern end of Strathcona Provincial Park on Vancouver Island and is a bit tricky to get to. The trailhead is at the west end of a Great Central Lake, a long fjord-like lake near Port Alberni and is only accessible by boat or a multi-day paddling trip. Fortunately for those who don’t have a boat or canoe, there is a water taxi (www.dellafallswatertaxi.com) that takes hikers to the trailhead throughout the hiking season. My friend Dean and I got a ride out on the taxi and did an overnight trip to the base of the falls. You can’t see much of the falls from the base, so we also did a side trip up to a viewpoint across the valley from the falls.
