Phillips Ridge, Strathcona Park, Vancouver Island

On the August long weekend of my friend Doug and I did a day hike up to Arnica Lake on Phillips Ridge and then further west along the ridge. The snow pack was insanely heavy that year, so there was still a few meters of snow up on the ridge. We explored west along the rugged ridge as far we could before turning back. Its central location provides great views of the heart of Strathcona Park, including the Golden Hinde, Vancouver Island’s highest peak. The trail up to Arnica Lake is a series of well graded switchbacks but the trail deteriorates beyond the lake and up on the ridge.

This trail can be used to access the Golden Hinde and other long routes such as a traverse to Elk Valley and the Phillips Ridge Circuit.
