Hollyford Track, South Island, New Zealand

The Hollyburn Track is a low level trail that follows the bottom of the Hollyburn Valley all the way to ocean through a variety of landscapes and features including rivers, big lakes, waterfalls, lush rainforest and a rocky seashore, all surrounded by steep mountains. The trail ends at the ocean where you will likely see Fiordland Crested Penguins, seals and lots of seabirds. There are many huts along the way that will give you respite from the rain (Fiordland is one of the rainiest places in the world so you WILL get wet). There are huts a day’s hike apart that will give you a chance to dry out. It takes about 6 days round trip, although it’s possible to shorten the trip with a jetboat ride across Lake McKerrow…if you are one of those cheater types. 🙂
