In the summer of 2006, I traveled around Iceland for 3 weeks before it was the major travel destination it is today; I went to Iceland before it was trendy and cool :).

I first checked out some lava caves near Reykjavik, then flew to Isafjordur to board a boat to the Westfjords where I hiked and wild camped for a few days before returning to Reykjavik to take a bus to Thorsmork, where I started the Landmannahellir trek to across surreal volcanic landscapes to the otherwordly terrain of Landmannalaugar. From there, I took another bus northwards through the desolate interior of the country to Lake Myvatn, where I did a few day hikes and then took a tour to the enormous Askja Caldera, before a pit stop in Akureyri before finishing the trip with a dip in the Blue Lagoon near Reykjavik. It was a great trip but not quite long enough to see the whole country. I will definitely have to go back some day.
