Mt Baker – Ptarmigan Ridge

Mt Baker dominated the horizon where I grew up so it’s always been an iconic, almost legendary mountain to me. I fell in love with it even more when I hiked along its ridges. It’s one of my favourite mountains in the world. Although Mt Baker is the main attraction, the surrounding area is incredibly beautiful as well. Mt Shuksan, another giant of the Cascades, looms close by with its sheer rock faces and steep glaciers.

Ptarmigan Ridge is really easy to get to, just drive up a paved road up to Mt Baker Ski Area and then continue a little farther to end of the road at Artist Point. The trailhead is at the far side of the parking lot. There is also a very short, easy trail up to Table Mountain, which is the small top above the parking lot. There is a fantastic view up there.

The trail itself is relatively short and easy and could be done as a day hike or as a leisurely backpack trip to really savour the area.
